With lavish mansions, unspoiled islands, and even a winery or two, the smallest state in the nation is packed with history, authentic New England flavor, and an allure all its own.
Newport runs along the Rhode Island coast and virtually all of America's prominent families--from the Astors to the Kennedy's--have summered in this gracious city by the sea. Six of their spectacular vacation homes are open for viewing on mansion tours offered by the Preservation Society. They most extravagant among them. The Breakers, features 70 rooms and took some 2,000 workers two years to complete. After seeing these incredible palatial estates, its hard to believe that former owners, such as railroad king Cornelius Vanderbilt II,blithely referred as "summer cottages". The Cliff Walk, offering views of the palatial Newport mansion on one side and the slate- -colored sea on the other, was once a path used by fisherman in pursuit of a day's work.
Belcourt Castle, a Louis Xlll--style grandiosity with the owners in residence: Hammersmith Farm, reception venue for the wedding of John F.Kennedy to Jacqueline Bouvier,filled with family photos and memorabilia; and The Astors' Beechwood Mansion, former home of Caroline Astor, who devised the Four Hundred list of America's social elite (Conveniently,400 was also the number of guests that could be entertained in her ballroom.) Here actors dressed as servants ,socialites, and friends of "The Astor" re-create the spirit of Newport's Gilded Age
